Getting to Know Boating at this icon of modern architecture allows visitors to savour the activities and facilities of a purpose-built facility run by a volunteer membership.

There is a chance to meet and talk with down-to-earth sailors and rowers of every age and background – to be engrossed in what boating involves, knowing the effects of the elements such as weather and tide and the mechanics of rigging (and adjusting it) to suit the conditions.

Sailing can encompass the absolute serenity of helming an ocean-going yacht, spotting the flora and fauna of the riverbank and sea; watching basking seals and other wild-life as one sails along. Alternatively there is the exhilaration of coping with the elements in the open sea and then relaxing at the end of sailing in the club’s bar or that of welcoming marina or associate yacht club.

However there is also the excitement of racing – in dinghies, rowing or cruisers (known as yachts) winning trophies and applause.

One joy to be discovered is the intricacies of navigation – totally engrossing – especially when planning day trips up or down the Thames, club excursions around the coast or on flotillas with other members in the Med.

Visitors can learn to manage all of this since Greenwich Yacht Club runs a number of the theoretical and practical training courses to welcome novice sailors and those with some experience to get the most out of Getting on the Water.
